Background to the POPI
Data protection legislation is needed because new technology and globalisation have profoundly changed the way data is collected and used.
Some estimates of the generation of data are staggering.
In the context of data protection legislation, the term ‘data’ refers to one or a combination of the three things opposite.
Why We Do It
- Information that is recorded as part of a filing system or with the intention that it should form part of a filing system.
- Information being processed by equipment or that has been prepared to be processed by equipment
- Any recorded information is held by a public authority.
